    VISIONS, DREAMS & MEMORIES
    American Record Guide, May/June, 2007

James Pellerite, once of the Philadelphia Orchestra and for decades the flute teacher at Indiana University, has evidently .... devoted almost 15 years now to mastering the American Indian flute and bringing it to a wider audience. ..... Pellerite manages, via funky fingerings and fractional-holings, a chromatic scale on an instrument that would much rather be pentatonic. It is a formidable technical challenge, but there no audible signs of a struggle in these performances. .... And he has clearly put a great deal of effort into urging, and inspiring, composers to write for it and him. ..... I stand in awe of what Pellerite has accomplished and wonder what future generations will do with these flutes. --- KREITNER

    AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, SEPT./OCT.2004

Pellerite left the modern flute and found a new passion, the northern plains flute. Most flutists own a copy of Pellerite's extensive guide to fingerings on the modern flute, so it is no surprise that he has not only mastered the northern plains flute, which is held vertically, but has invented a whole new series of fingerings that enable him to play diatonically and chromatically rather than just a pentatonic scale. He works with composers closely and commissions pieces. The result is a wide range of concertos. Most of the writing here takes advantage of the plaintive and improvisatory nature of the gentle flute, though most of it also includes some more chromatic writing. .....If the pieces are difficult, then Pellerite does not reveal the hard work in his expressive playing. He collaborates with David Oberg for colorful performances of all the works here. --- JOHNSON

    AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, Mar./Apr. 2006

James Pellerite.... His instrument is capable of silky intonations, fervid lyricism, and haunting poignancy. .... It’s illuminating to hear how the tone color of a native instrument can be applied, in expert hands, to modern classical repertoire belonging to the concert hall. Pellerite expands on the traditional pentatonic scale often used for this instrument, into the diatonic, adding chromaticism and showing us the poetic force this familiar sound is capable of. --- HALDEMAN

REVIEW by Jerod Impichchaachaaha (January 2004)

    “AWAKENINGS”
    Ten Études and a Sonata
for Northern Plains American Indian Flute
    by David Yeagley (Comanche)
    James Pellerite, flutist

Although American Indians have been composing now for over half a century, the arrival of the very first published recording of an American Indian composer will finally give their voice due credit, and will encourage more such professional releases. AWAKENINGS is the very first release of Indian music that stands proudly next to contemporary Indian artists of other genres. Just as Indian painters and sculptors have been abstracting Indian icons into contemporary expressions of Indian art, so has Dr. Yeagley successfully composed classical contemporary Indian music for the Indian's oldest icon-the Indian flute.

So, what does contemporary classical music from an Indian composer sound like? It is haunting, deep, thoughtful, pensive, and of spiritual import.

With technically flawless execution, James Pellerite delivers a stunning performance, which creates a new home for the cedar flute as a classical instrument. Bruce Egre and Alan Bise (Grammy Nominee) of Azica Records stay true to their form, and have created another masterwork of sound engineering and music production. Listening to this CD is truly a satisfying experience.

AWAKENINGS is, without question, unmatched by any other compositions for the American Indian flute. The musical hunting ground has now been officially expanded. We shall be anxiously waiting for what game Dr. Yeagley brings down in the future.
